The largest known diamond on earth is a yellow diamond weighing in at a huge 616 carats. The Kimberley Octahedron is an uncut diamond that was discovered in South Africa in the Dutoitspan mine about 1972. It was the property of Diamond Trading Company (De Beers) in 2001. The diamond is today exhibited in the "Diamond Vault" of the visitors center of the "Kimberley Big Hole".
One of the most famous yellow diamonds is the Tiffany Yellow diamond. This cushion shaped diamond weighs a massive 128 carats. It was made famous by the legendary film Breakfast at Tiffany's which starred Audrey Hepburn. Tiffany & Co is a famous diamond jewellers located in New York City.
This photo shows the stone set in the "Bird on the Rock" brooch, which was designed by the famous Tiffany jeweler Jean Schlumberger. The piece is the Tiffany Yellow's most well-known setting, and is the setting it remains in to this day.
Yellow diamonds are fancy diamonds. These natural, untreated, colored diamonds are rare. One in every 10,000 carats is a natural fancy colored diamond. Their rarity is only matched by their beauty.
Natural Fancy Colored Diamonds can be found in almost every shade of color, from pale pink to dark black.
In it purest state, a diamond is composed of carbon atoms and is colorless. When certain atoms replace carbon atoms, they impart tints of color. Yellow diamonds are the result of nitrogen atoms being present when the diamond is formed. The presence of boron atoms results in blue diamonds. Diamonds that are pink to red and orange in color have imperfections at the atomic level which scientists call “color centers.” Green, blue-green, and a small number of blue diamonds are a special case. Their colors result from exposure to radiation over thousands to millions of years in the Earth. In all of these cases, portions of white light striking the diamond are absorbed. The remaining portions of light that are not absorbed are transmitted to the eye and result in the color we see.
Discovered in 1866 by children digging amongst the shrubbery of their father's land, it remained for some time "undiscovered".
Iit was not until a neighbour farmer, Schalk van Niekerk, who possessed a smattering of geological knowledge noticed the stone whilst visiting the Jacobs' farmhouse.
Whilst van Niekerk did not imagine it could be a diamond he thought it interesting enough to offer to buy the Eureka from the children. However, Mrs Jacobs refused to accept any payment and simply gave the stone to her neighbour.
The Florentine Diamond is a lost diamond of Indian origin. It is light yellow in colour with very slight green overtones. It is cut in the form of an irregular (although very intricate) nine-sided 126-facet double rose cut, with a weight of 137.27 carats (27.454 g). The stone is also known as the Tuscan, the Tuscany Diamond, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, the Austrian Diamond and the Austrian Yellow Diamond.
The Sancy Diamond is one of the most famous diamonds in the world. It is currently displayed in the Apollo Gallery at the Louvre in Paris.
The Sancy weighed 106 carats as a rough diamond and now weighs 55 carats after the cutting process..
The shield-shaped stone comprises two back-to-back crowns (the typical upper half of a stone) but lacks any semblance to a pavilion (the lower portion of a stone, below the girdle or midsection).
